Woodcock looks like no other type of British game bird. The long bill, large dark eyes and intricate brown, russet and cream feathering, designed for camouflage against the woodland floor, make it one of the most unusual birds you will come across. Every woodcock we supply is whole and unprocessed, with head, feet and plumage intact. Each bird is checked for feather condition before dispatch, and birds supplied outside the main season will have been previously frozen.

As a specimen, woodcock appeals to taxidermists, wildlife artists, photographers and film production teams. Its migratory background, wintering in Britain from Russia and Scandinavia, also makes it a useful talking point for Scout groups and outdoor educators running bushcraft sessions.

Please note: as this bird has not been processed by our butchery, we are unable to undertake our usual quality control checks on the meat. It will arrive with traces of blood on the plumage. The vast majority of birds are in excellent condition, but customers purchasing for consumption should be aware that we cannot guarantee meat quality as we would with our oven-ready range.

Conservation and sourcing
Britain hosts up to 1.3 million wintering woodcock from stable populations in Russia and Scandinavia, but our resident breeding birds have declined by 35% since 2003. That is why we only source woodcock shot after 1st December, when the migratory birds have arrived. This timing protects vulnerable UK breeding woodcock while allowing responsible harvest of the abundant winter visitors, an approach endorsed by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT).
